Antibiotics don't work on the flu which is a virus; they only work on bacterial infections. But the flue can lead to pneumonia which certain kinds ARE bacterial, and antibiotics WILL help that.

Problem is that people ask for antibiotics anyway and docs prescribe them just to not argue; one reason that bugs are developing resistance to the antibiotics we use.
