I'm pretty sure the chicoms banned ALL religious books not just the bible. Even the Nazis were better at PR than that!!
But Lerxt you bring up an interesting point. Given that yesterday was Dirt Day (the dirt people call it Earth Day which just happens to coincide with Vladimir Lenin's birthday) where are the dirt people on China, pollution and the Olympics? |
That's a good point, it's not their prayer book per se, but I still think you should be able to recount some of it from memory for 2 weeks. Early Christians didn't even have a coherent Bible until after the council of Nicea, and to me you could either commit some passages to memory or just tough it out for 2 weeks.
As far as the eco-people and china, they probably care more about the pollution than the human rights issues. A lot of eco-people see people as part of the problem and probably love trewes more than people.
Don't get me wrong, I love trees too, and they are more pleasant than a lot of people are. But I think it's hard for the Western mind to grasp the Chinese tendency to de-emphasize the individual person as opposed to the group. Even non-Communist Chinese seem to put the family and the community ahead of the individual. You can look at Chinese-Americans' cultural habits to see that.
My view on China is just pragmatic, in that I feel we're better off trading with them and talking to them than fighting a world war with them. I think it would make World War II look like Grenada. Well, that's an exaggeration, but not that much. I think a world war against china would tear up the world much more than WWII did, and we might not win. They could lose a BILLION people in casualties and still have as many left as we have right now. How exactly do we deal with that?
My view is that if we don't trade with them, they will start a war with us. Is it worth it to us to fight them, and can we win? I'm not sure about the answers to those questions.
