For those who don't. Edwin Edwards was the governor of Louisiana. He was convicted of at lest one felony (accepting bribes or something relating to the governorship) and spent like 5 years or so in PRISON. To say the least his political career was OVER!!!!
David Duke was a "reconstructed" Klansman. In other words he was a KKK leader who wore a suit, looked pretty, and wasn't quite so blatant about his racism. He always spoke of himself as supporting the white race not tearing down blacks.
So, I believe it was in 1996 or so David Duke announces he is running for governor of Louisiana. Edwards, who by this time was out of prison, ran against him. People in Louisiana KNEW Edwards was a crook (this wasn't one of those cases where people say, "oh they got him on a technicality"). In fact bumper stickers started showing up saying "Elect the Crook. It is Important". And they reelected Edwards because they didn't want a racist like David Duke to be their governor.
Now think about this. This was LOUISIANA not California, Oregon or Massachusetts. Louisiana is NOT a hotbed of political correctness. In fact Louisiana is full of small town people, the type Obama characterizes as "clinging to their religion and guns" and "showing antipathy for that which is different from them". And yet these small town people did NOT HESITATE to vote for an ADMITTED CROOK rather than the shiny new racist!!! |
