Eddie Murphy concedes he’s the father to Scary Spice daughter

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 5/1/07 — Faced with a paternity suit, actor Eddie Murphy admitted he is the baby daddy of Melanie “Scary Spice” Brown’s young daughter Friday.

Murphy, best known for “Dreamgirls” and his “Beverly Hills Cop” series, said he “always has and will continue to honor his responsibilities as a father,” according to a statement released through his publicist, Arnold Robinson.

“Mr. Murphy and Ms. Brown dated very briefly and never made any plans of ANY sort,” the statement said. “He acknowledges paternity of the child Angel, and has paid child support to Ms. Brown as well as covering the expenses of her pregnancy.”

Brown filed a petition Thursday that seeks to legally establish Murphy as the father. She said she and Murphy, 46, dated for four months in 2006 before mutually deciding to have a child.

Murphy had a busy week. He also became engaged to 10-month girlfriend Tracey Edmonds. She said in the media that she “didn’t care” about the past tryst or paternity issue.

“Angel is my baby and Eddie’s,” Brown, 32, told AP. “She will always know that she was planned and wanted by both of us.”

Angel Iris Murphy Brown was born April 3. Brown also has an 8-year-old daughter.

Murphy “views this as a private matter and as such, will not be making any further comments about it,” his statement said.

The Oscar-nominated actor has five children from his marriage to Nicole Mitchell Murphy, who filed for divorce in 2005. He got engaged last week to film producer Tracey Edmonds.
