Family ordered to leave restaurant because of crying child

JACKSON, SC (WIS) - At first, Gail Martin says she wasn't sure who was yelling at her to leave the Buckhead Café in Jackson. It turned out to be Jackson Police Chief Dennis Rushton, asking Gail and her family to leave.

"I didn't know what he was doing," Gail's daughter Lauren said.

The family was just about to order when 4-year-old Alyssa began crying; she suffers from autism.

Gail says Chief Rushton yelled across the restaurant again.

"He said, ‘You need to pick her up and you need to get out of here now,'" Gail said.

Lauren is upset with the chief.

"That was very mean to say -- just very mean," Lauren said.

The embarrassment was too much for Gail and her daughters, who soon left the restaurant.

"I wasn't embarrassed of Alyssa's behavior, I was embarrassed of the way it was handled," Gail said.

Chief Rushton would not make a statement, but he did say he felt Mrs. Martin's daughter was being extremely loud and bothering other customers.

Even though he knew the child was autistic, he said he did ask the Martins to leave.

Gail says she feels like Chief Rushton should have been more understanding about what was going on with her autistic daughter.

"We can't just lock them up, they have every right to be out in public like everyone else," Gail said.

Now Gail hopes her story will bring more awareness about autism.

"If it can happen in a small town in Jackson, it can happen anywhere," Gail said.

Chief Rushton says he is open to going through training through the South Carolina Autism Society to help him better understand the condition.

Rushton also says his police commissioner has invited the Martin family to meet with them at City Hall.

The Martins say they are open to meeting with the commissioner.

Fairy_Tale_Pixie thinks they are the cool kid
I know what it's like to be with an autistic child when there having one of those moments. My cousin has two of them. One is worse than the other. But there are people out there that will let there child scream for no reason I know a few. Even though they don't have autism. Those parents ruin it for the ones that do have autism, by letting them scream. Get up and walk out side or to the loo. When they stop scream return to your seat. And if they don't stop just get up and leave. It's just the polite thing to do. But of course with some children with autism it's easier said than done, lol. But for the ones that doesn't have autism... then do try to hush them up.

I would leave personally on my own. But a lot of it would depend on the type of restaurant it was too. I mean who'd even notice at Chuck E. Cheese Hell???

HA!! Ya true that. But if its at a nice one. Then yea... I would leave, if I see the parents at least trying to stop the kid. If not then knowing me... which I do. I would go up to the person and say something lol. That's just the way I am.

That is like telling someone who has a tick to leave because there movements make them nauseated. People just need to be more caring and understnading of others. You don't know what that parent has gone thru that day. And maybe they are ignoring them so that they dont explode in the childs face. I just ignore other kids that are crying. Cause I know it is what kids do.

Handicaps can't be helped.

When I go out for a quiet dinner, I avoid "family areas".
The smoking section is fine with me, sit me at a booth as far away from any screaming meemies as I can get. I don't have to listen to a child whine, cry, and scream.
I'll asked to be moved.

Yea. But when I pay good money to seat down to a good meal. But I do understand both sides. I've been in public places with all kinds of kids. lol. I even get pissed when someone looks at me when the little ones are crying. But people (on both sides) should respect others. Shouldn't let kids scream at the top of there lungs and all you do is ignore them. But then again if people get pissed then they should asked to be moved. So I understand both sides. As long as I see the parent or who ever is with them try and do something then , I know their trying and it doesn't bother me as bad. Lol. At least you try to hush kids up. I ate out with you before. And you know whom I speak of when I say they don't try and hush their kids. Lol at least Ella is quiet as long as you feed her. Lol. And when you stop she gives you a look like "WTF!! YOU BETTER FEED ME WOMAN!!". I stop feeding her just to see that look .Lol She is a funny girl.

lol yeah. I just could see the other side of the coin too. You work so hard just to get out of the house then they act up and all you want to do is, cry, or scream back, or spank them. If you cry people think that you shouldn't have kids if your that unstable. If you scream back at them people think you abuse your kids. If you spank them they call social services on you. If you sut there and ignore them and try to calm down before you handle the kid people think you don't care. And I know how embarrassing it can be to have a kid act up in public. So I try to be respectful and ignore other peoples kids and take care of my own. I think it a lose lose type situation......lol
