Rep Power: 24 | | I've got a small custom built VibroChamp with a 12" speaker for small stuff. Believe me it's a loud 6W. I've got a '68 Bassman head with a custom built 4x10 cab and a '71 Bassman Ten. The Ten is probably the only tube rectified one of it's kind around here.
As far as effects, I've gone from plugging straight into the amp to a few stomps to a full pedalboard and back to the basics again. Nowadays I'm mostly acoustic so I go through a Baggs PADI into the board, maybe a chorus every now and then. |

Rep Power: 29 | | | I have a Carvin 100watt halfstack that I usually run at half power, 50 watts. It has a beautiful Fendery clean and all the gain I need on the drive channel. Because the drive channel has 5 12AX7s for the preamp I don't have to over crank it to get the distortion I want. I just use the power tubes for warmth, not breakup. That's why I like 6L6 tubes, they are cleaner with less sag.
I also have a couple of Peavey Triumph 60 watt 1x12 combos, which are the forerunner of the Ultra, XXX and JSX amps. Voiced a little differently than those, but a 3 channel tube amp. They do the trick as well; I will use an extra 112 or 212 cab with them for the punch of a sealed back extension cab. Gives you the 412 tone without the weight or space.
For effects, I can do without them but I do like them a lot. Sometimes stomp boxes, sometimes multis. I have a couple of older Digitechs, an RP3 and an RP7, that I like. They provide delay, chorus, flange, pitch shift, and intelligent harmonizer, all of which I like to use. I know when NOT to use them too, though, which is most important.
I have a rack setup which I use mostly for recording but can be used for a small stereo setup live. It's a Peavey Rockmaster preamp, which is similar to the preamps in my Peavey combos. I run a Rocktron Intellifex and a Digitech IPS33 harmonizer with that into an Alesis RA100 power amp and then into 2 Carvin 212 vertical slant cabs. That gives a stereo image and is still as compact as a single 412 cab. I'd like to replace the RA100 with a low-power tube power amp but it's not in the budget right now. But the RA100 is pretty cool; it's really a reference power amp for studio monitors, but it does have 100w per side so it makes a decent moderate power amp for a club rig. |

Rep Power: 27 | | | This is a great thread, finally.... There are so many ways this can go between tube, transistors, or the newer hyper stuff that has both (mosfet). Yes I know mosfet isn't all that new. I am a member of both schools (tube and transisters; especially this new modeling craze). There is need for all; you have the purest who swear by tubes and refuse to play nothing else; but then they are leaving themselves open to not being exposed to the new stuff. Then you have the newer amps that are really frigging cool that can do almost everything but cook your breakfast but they are not as warm as a tube amp but close; and getting closer. I have a stereo Tech21 Combo setup (two separate amps being driven in stereo from the Line6 PodXt Live) that is unbelievable sounding, and a 5150 (first edition) full stack thats is also great sounding. They are both great at what they do but both have strengths and weaknesses. There is also the crew who love stomp boxes and those who love rack stuff; I have both there also. Its really up to the user for that golden tone and one day I hope to find it. I am one of the older guys here and like Bert I grew up when a nice set up was a guitar going into a distortion pedal into a amp. I am very envious of you younger guys who not only love the newer stuff, embrace it and are very knowledgeable about it. I have a PodXt Live and a Variax and this is one hell of a setup and one of these days I will figure out how to use it. Till then I guess I will continue plugging away. I tell ya who really knows the newer shit and knows how to use it is Aaron; wow the things this guy can do recording / mixing is unbelievable............

Rep Power: 50 | | | aww shucks, jocko. Now If I could only get my RAM situation settled, I'll be cookin with gas.... or however the saying goes...
That Line 6 of yours has some of the best sounds I've heard from an all-in-one floor model. I can't wait to do some more recording with it and get past the distortion into the myriad of great sounds that thing has.

Rep Power: 20 | | | The thing that I have trouble getting into is the modeling guitar. Line 6 made one, I believe Yamaha made one, now Fender has one, and Gibson has the Robot Guitar for those who can't stay in tune.
I know it is going to happen, putting computers/computer chips in guitars is inevitable, I guess I am kind of a traditionalist when it comes to that. And stompboxes, got to have stomp boxes (Boss), no digital multi-effects please.
Not to contradict myself, but I do like Matt Bellamy's (Muse) guitars (Manson Bombers). They are custom built with all kinds of effects routed internally, they are really cool, but that is a bit different than a modeling guitar. |

Rep Power: 20 | | | My experience with modeling is that its great for recording, and sucks live.
Some may differ on that opinion. | | |
