I am one of the older guys here and like Bert I grew up when a nice set up was a guitar going into a distortion pedal into a amp. I am very envious of you younger guys who not only love the newer stuff, embrace it and are very knowledgeable about it. I have a PodXt Live and a Variax and this is one hell of a setup and one of these days I will figure out how to use it. Till then I guess I will continue plugging away. I tell ya who really knows the newer shit and knows how to use it is Aaron; wow the things this guy can do recording / mixing is unbelievable............

Recently, the 2 guitarists I play with purchased Fender Hot Rod D'Villes. (I think that's what they are.... 4x10's?) Anyway, they went from Mud to crystal clear tone. Those little combo amps really seem to have it going on. But I play bass so what do I know.... Hell, I can't even get a tone I like from my amp. Hey Bert, let me trade you for that Mpulse.......

Edit: Also for pedals / effects, it truly is personal taste and style. If what you are playing calls for a phaser, why not? But definitely in moderation.

They have them at MMI, better hurry almost every bassist I let play on mine buys one.
I always ask John where is my commission check?
Like that will happen.
Guitar center has put a world of hurt on them.
I tell everyone I know to avoid GC.
I am starting to hate it with Walmart flair.

I think it's the little guys who will survive this fall out anyway. If they can just hold on. I saw a for sale sign in front of MMI. Kinda curious.

crate blue voodoo tube and a sweet bc rich mocking bird. tube amps are the shit as far as "tone" goes!

I disagree.
I'm not going to debate that, because is not worth my valuable time.

To each their own, different tones for different genres. If it makes your socks roll up and down.
