if your not in a band you wouldn't need a recording, i'm just guessing.
I guess, to me, that's like saying if you're not in a band, you don't need to know how to play an instrument. Recording is to a musician what a journal/diary is to a writer. I can't imagine any musician not wanting to record, even if it's just multi-tracking themselves to hone their compositional skills. I suppose that's why I made this thread (and edited the title to better reflect what I'm getting at)
I just have a hard time imagining any musician wouldn't want to record themselves.
It's like a poet not wanting to write down their poems.

hope that makes sense. Just gain a perspective on how others view it.

yea, i was kidding. refer to hot dog joke. lol

like i said before, my band is to a point where not having a good recording has hurt us.
we really need a solid recording right now to get into some of the places we want to play. (and some we don't)

it would also help financially......
i can't tall you how many people walk up to us after a gig/show/bar event/ and want to buy a CD.

if you're trying to be a proffesional band, grow your band as a business, and be taken seriously then it's a must.
there's no doubt about it.

I record new basslines everyday.
Just the bass.
Trying to come up with something new and much different than anybody.
Talking about hard to do.
I have a hard time knocking this flea off me.

and when you have your own studio?

One of the reasons I tried to make the thread 'recording-centric' and not 'studio-specific' is that lots of folks have their own studio these days.
You can't say 'stay out of the studio till it's time to record' when the studio is your rehearsal room, your writing/composing location, etc.

What better place to write or rehearse than a studio?

maybe I misunderstood the post there, but for some of us the studio is our homebase for all things musical; for every aspect of the music. There IS nowhere else to spend time.

Sorry,,,,, The use of the word "recording" to me denotes studio documentation with intent. Saving rehearsal/bar gig tracks on pro-tools/cube-base is a really good idea for the serious business minded bands if you don't mind hurting some feelings over lack of focus. Even Bert mentioned on another thread he saved a song they played great one night and listing to it a day or two later he couldn't believe how much he overplayed. It's also a good idea to go to a "good" studio in the area ounce a year, block out about six hrs or so and get down a solid demo of one or two songs. Hell I have a remote control 20bit ADAT mounted in my effects rack and the band doesn't know when I'm taping or not. All useful in their own right but in no way will they replace the need for a real recording in a real studio staffed with professional personnel.

SOPHOMORE COLLABORATIONS:Okay, your band's been together a little while now, your sound has been refined by now.you've been doing that regional touring.Time for you to show off those talents that you've honed. It's time to put out a product that showcases this.

PANDORA'S BOX:The band's third effort, everyone's over the catchy lil hooks of the first two albums. This is where your true artists will shine, but,if it's not working for ya,better hope you can close this box and stick with whatver else has been working.

GREATEST HITS ALBUM:I'll see ya when ya get there...

Ok, sorry, I could read no further... I laughed so hard I woke Mark up...haha

...now back to your regularly scheduled program

Of course David, I'm sure I was intoxicated, and everybody was impressed except for another bassist in the club, and me when I played the recording back. I had to laugh at myself.
I still play that song I was talking about with a little less enthusiasm because of that recording. But I still do it MY way.

YEAH, THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN BOUT. Playing to a live audience and playing to the machine are entirely two different sets of chops. Different attack, different settings on different gear, and different mind-set entirely. I'd love to get a couple of beers, six shots of Cuervo and a pair of Bert's tone monsters on a big outdoor stage and shower down,,, but into the machine most of the enthusiasm just won't transfer(and it would shake the foundation of the building). Bert's about as good of a "home studio" man as you'll find along the coast. I'd wager he could beat up a recording after the fact so nobody would notice BUT him. If I had to play to the machinery all the time I'd slit my(or some-body's) throat.

I get my live fix regular fo sho!
Recording practice regular is a reflection time to critique, and make changes, and improvement suggestions in every members performances.
Thanks for the home studio kudos there, but I don't make a pimple on a real studios ass.
LOL

I have a project coming up with an old friend/guitarist/vocalist, and I need a drummer.
He has several originals he wants to lay down.
Max you want to help lay down some tracks?
Anybody?
