Any sound techs here?

Just got 2 new parametric eq's.

Just wanted thoughts on using them on monitors on live sound.

If you have ever used them what do you like or dislike about them?

I have read alot on them, with the volume of some players today you can not get them loud enough with out feedback. Parametric eq is supposed to help you make them loud as hell with out feed back.
Taken in consideration that the monitors are out of phase with the mics.

I'm giving it a go, hopefully next by weekend. I'll let you know what I think about them.

Stubber was pretty good with those things. I tried them some but the problem I had was the pink-noise variables in 3-4 hours of bar stages. Vocally, if everyone doesn't use the same mic with fairly close settings the push/pull of overtones/sub-shock of any given frequency with that much bleedthrough is touchEEEEEEEE. I could get it so screwed so quick I'd lose ground zero. Necessary in the studio but live monitors I still prefer individual 31 band bi-amped. Good luck with that one.

Never use them live. I have 4 seperate monitor mixes (sometimes 6) each mix has it's own 15 band EQ I can cut enough FQ's to eliminate feedback and get the stage volume loud for those bands who "must have it loud" I "knock on wood" never have feedback issues unless it's during soundcheck or something goes horribly wrong. I ring out my rig extensivley DBX Drive rack got to love them. My only other feedback fiasco was few weeks ago at a bluegrass festival 6 large diaphram mics at one time. Yea that was fun after about 10 minutes i finally got it set where i could almost walk away.

I thinking that small venues its not a good idea.
I agree with you David the "sub shock" can add frequency over tones will breed feedback, couple that with different mics used, and you are asking for feedback galore.
I'll experiment with them, but alas, I will leave my 31 band eq's in the rack, and call them ol' trusty.
I already have smoking volume on my monitors but in achieving that I have lost quality.
Because by cutting the "problem frequency" I have also cut tonal quality.
On 15, and 31 bands you can't control the tightness of the Q.
I believe with the Parametric eq's I can narrow the band, and control the Q tighter, thus having the monitors sound better, and be loud at the same time with out feeding back.
PEQ has been around way before graphic eq's. Its nothing new, its old science.
Being able to sweep many frequencies, you have about as much cut, and or boost that you could ever want.

I'm not totally schooled on dialing them in, but I have read enough to educate a entire class of sound engineers on PEQ.
I guess reading about things, asking questions, and getting an understanding of how to use sound electronics is a pet peeve of mine, is that a bad thing?
Anal? Yes you have to be or sound like crap. How you sound live is everything.
I wish I had an foh guy to do it for me.
In the amature ranks you have to wear all the hats.

I'll agree with you spert, but I guess after all the sound gigs I've done even the big named groups we've all used graphic EQ. A moto we kinda live buy is if you can hear yourself don't worry about if the monitors sound good the FOH is what needs to be heard as long as you can hear the singer guitar player and such the overal tone of the monitors doesn't matter that much.

On a side note i guess too we always have "monitor world" with a totally seperate mix and a monitor engineer so i guess that would make a difference.

I can't afford that luxury.

Maybe you should try a PEQ. If you don't like it you can always get your money out of it.
They are a hot item, not hard to move.

I likes me some IEMs! we only have 1 monitor onstage. I'm not sure what Tony uses to ring it out and reign it in (I'm guessing graphic), but it sure goes quicker with only 1 (still takes a while though, considering the mic she uses).
I guess not everybody wants something jammed in their ear though.

PEM's are ok if you buy the best. The price is outrageous.
When I played with them I tried to used them but they kept falling out from sweat.
I liked the way they sounded.
Easy to mix.
I love the ones in the studio where you can dial in your own mix.
HEAR technology I think is what they are called.
From what I understand they are being used live too.
Best thing for monitors ever.

Thanks for making this a great tech discussion post ya'll!

IEM's are great. I personally can only use them for about an hr then i pull it out and use a monitor. Why i don't know it bothers my ear afterawhile i can't hear my guitar as well because of fatigue. Taking it out exposes me to loud sound without cranking my volume. I am thinking about the custom fitted pieces for about 250.00 I have a Shurs PSM400 I like it, does it's job.

I personally think there should be a sound tech forum.
