Good brand of Mixer?

I'm shopping for a 12 channel (or so) mixer.

Right now, Yamaha is on the top of my list.
I have also been flirting with Powered Mixers.

What are your opinions?
Experiences?

We are a Four Piece. Generally play small bars/clubs.
We want to be have the capability of mic'ing

- Kick
- Snare
- 2 Vocals (rare occasion 3)
- 2 toms
- 2 guitar amps

Words of wisdom?

All i need is the low down.
I simply won't understand long winded technical mumbow-jumbow.

thanks alot, yall, in advance

Love my 1604, and 1202 mackie.
In a small club I wouldn't worry about the toms, or the snare.
1202 has 8 xlr and 4 1/4" inputs. I wish there were more aux's for monitors/effects.
Get a mixer with built in effects, and powered.
If you want cheap generic mackie copy...use behringer.

If you think you band is going to get signed, you are living in a dream world.
Getting signed isn't what it used to be.
It takes every one of YOU, and YOUR band mates tireless hard work. It makes no difference who your buddies are. They can't help you much.
You better be thick skinned, and like the enegized bunny, you keep going and going...

Hey Bert (or anyone else)

OK
so which kind of Powered Mixer is better?
The flat ones or the box ones?
What's the difference?

Right now I'm looking at Yamaha and Behringer.
(we have all Behringer amps, by the way)

by the way

What the hell are all of those "white clip things" on the back of my amps?
How should they be set?

I would recommend an unpowered mixer so you can upgrade easier by just adding more power amps when necessary. I think it's always best to go modular when you can; then you're less likely to have to replace more items when it's time to upgrade.

Mackie's are fine for PA'ing, IMO.
Yammy and Carvin are also comparable.

We went with a 21-channel Crest when putting our rig together. Definitely heard a difference, but it wasn't unreasonably expensive.

Speakers will probably make a bigger difference than mixers or amps;
what are you using for PA cabinets?

(I'm not familiar w/ Behringer amps, but sounds like you're talking about DIP switches. Depending on the amp, these usually change EQ curves/presets or mono/bridged/parallel settings that would affect how much power you're pushing/how you split your output signal)

Just remembered, I saw a mid-size Mackie in a Mobile pawn shop yesterday~
Don't recall the exact model but it was at least 12 channels, I think.
They were asking $399, but you know how PS's work; probably could work them way down off of that.
