| | | | i need guitar help (story too!) ok, so i play bass....
and im on the phone talking with my dad and i know he used to be in a band waaay back when (over 30 years ago when he started) and we're talkingand he asked me if i wanted to try guitar, (im only playing bass because my friend is starting out on guitar himself)
he tells me its a fender strat, im thinking a 30 year old strat awesome right?
nope.... i pull it out of its dust encrusted corner and look at it...
"wait a sec, a fender doesnt have 3 tuning keys on each side"
my dad was screwing with me to see if i could tell the diffrence.... it was a
20+ year old les paul custom
i rushed out this morning to buy strings for it, and a guitar practice amp... strung it up plugged it in hoped it would atleast make a sound... and damnit it did!!!!
even with a 10W amp this things a beast
i named her "jolene" cause its cherry
but.. i know how to play exactly one song on the guitar... a lil country diddy, no chords nothing!
so im asking your advice, where should i start? what should i be focusing on?
and what the hell kind of advice can you give me?
ill have pictures later if you want to see it |

Rep Power: 49 | | go buy mel bay's modern guitar method. it will teach you the basics of basics. Starting with the E string. how to play E E F F G G F F E E on the first string.
Then the 2nd string. B B C C D D C C B B. and so on, and so on.
after that, go buy your favorite bands tablature book, and learn how to play songs from other people/bands. That will teach you different styles, different rhythm patterns, cool sounding chord patterns. pick up a guitar world magazine and try learning those. If you don't know how to read tablature, use the internet. you could probably learn how to play guitar right off the internet these days.
and, if all this is still kinda confusing, shoot me a p.m. and maybe we can meet up and i can give ya a couple lessons to get ya started. i am definitely not the greatest guitarists, or some great teacher, but i could get you started.
oh and sell me that old piece a junk you have. $100 sound o.k.???

Rep Power: 49 | | | ok. good. now just practice, practice, practice. then when your tired of that. go and practice some more. what really helps, is playing along with someone, or a band. you can learn by leaps and bounds that way, compared to sitting in your room for 10 hours. unless you like steve vai!!!
and thats not a les paul custom. that is a SG of some sorts. are you sure its an actual bona fide gibson?
