Recording at home HELP, thread

Home recording HELP!, thread.

I've decided that I need the convienence of recording at home.
Sometimes ideas come up at 3am when a studio is nowhere in sight.

What "cheap" but effective program can I buy for my computer?
......something as "user friendly" as possible.
I want to be able to plug my guitar right into the "program" and hit record.
I need something that will allow me to record several tracks at one time.....
something that will let me mix and master my own stuff.

Anyone have suggestions?

I have a roland 1880, I love it.
PC based is cool for editing and such, and I have been there and done that, I like the hard disk recorders.I can edit on the roland n.p., plus no windows crap to deal with.

If you think you band is going to get signed, you are living in a dream world.
Getting signed isn't what it used to be.
It takes every one of YOU, and YOUR band mates tireless hard work. It makes no difference who your buddies are. They can't help you much.
You better be thick skinned, and like the enegized bunny, you keep going and going...

Mac- based recording is King, man.
Don't buy, hack. I'll give you a copy of cubase if you're willing to buy a mac to use it with. The reason why mac is such an effective platform for recording is because of it's minimalistic nature; your computer's resources aren't being sapped by the OS.
I use a mac with a firepod interface and that is all you need.

First, get the signal to the computer. Several options here...I've heard some of the MAudio stuff works well.http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...ace?sku=703606

Some people even just

That gets you a USB connection to your computer and you can use Mics or guitars directly into that box.

Then it's software time. Several free choices, actually. There's always Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net). It's open source, works ok.

Some prefer Kristal. It looks and feels more professional and supports ASIO drivers. http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/

The ASIO stuff is important. This lets you record and playback at the same time with no delay. Without them, and in Audacity, it's hard to get them to sync up with up to a half second delay. ASIO drivers prevent those issues. (http://www.asio4all.com/)

Looking through programs on this box, I see I have Reaper installed. (http://www.reaper.fm/). Haven't used that one much, but it utilizes the ASIO drivers as well. Might be worth a look.

I just got a Macbook that I'm planning on using for recording at home and as a soundsource for drums and keys onstage. Will be using Logic software.

My bandmates have been recording with Logic for several years on Macs.
I'm looking forward to learning from them and finding out just how big of a difference the Mac system can make. We'll see.

I noticed that M -audio is making a USB keyboard controller that also functions as an audio interface with several input options (you can run your guitars, line level inputs, and XLRs into it). I might give one of those a try too.

Some people just............ what? (re-read your post)

OK....so all of those programs you put up there are free?
And I need one of those interface things in order for my PC to "talk" to my intruments?

So I run my
mics
guitars
etc etc
though the interface into the PC?

Right?
