First, all of those programs I listed are truly free. No licensing issues at all. Second, you don't have to use a recording interface. I've used a basic mic, like a desktop PC mic, plugged it into the line in on my soundcard, put it in front of the amp, and gotten a decent sound. If you have a mixer with a line out laying around, you can use it to mix whatever you want then run the line in on your soundcard. Even a cheap $30 Beringer mixer would work well. That way you wouldn't have to go with the USB interface.

hmmmmmm yea, one input could be a problem. I'm trying to record my band and others that i jam with from time to time. I need something that I can run us all through at one. Maybe the Lexicon is the way to go?

Rep Power: 42 ![]() | how much RAM in your pc? Do you have Firewire connections? I'm hearing firewire is to be preferred over USB. I'm shopping for interfaces right now too If you're considering the Lexicon, maybe check out this Mackie too. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...ace?sku=248154 we have one of those interfaces, Tony got it for working on his laptop at home. It sold for around $400 originally, it's down to $20 cheaper than the Lexicon presently. Last edited by xush; 11-28-2007 at 11:48 AM. |

Rep Power: 42 ![]() | the 1 gig might be your RAM; or is it really an external/removable storage device/stick? If not, if it's installed internally in your PC that's your RAM. 1's not bad, but more is always better w/ DAWs. I would think most PCs come w/ 1 gig at least, these days. 512k a few years ago... I haven't used a USB interface yet, but from my research it appears you might only be able to send a stereo-mix/2 track signal with it. Firewire will allow as many inputs/tracks as you have available with the interface. Can anyone else confirm this? USB only allows 2 tracks at a time? Firewire's also faster than USB. and as for mastering, that tends to fall outside of the realm of most of these free/cheap program suites. You'll be able to EQ and normalize, etc; but real mastering software is going to be much pricier. I'm looking at the Presonus Firepod as a main contender, interface-wise. It's in the $400 range, and allows 8 simultaneous inputs. |
