I haven't used a USB interface yet, but from my research it appears you might only be able to send a stereo-mix/2 track signal with it.
Firewire will allow as many inputs/tracks as you have available with the interface. Can anyone else confirm this? USB only allows 2 tracks at a time?
Firewire's also faster than USB.

and as for mastering, that tends to fall outside of the realm of most of these free/cheap program suites. You'll be able to EQ and normalize, etc; but real mastering software is going to be much pricier.

I'm looking at the Presonus Firepod as a main contender, interface-wise.
It's in the $400 range, and allows 8 simultaneous inputs.
Buy another gig ram stick if your cpu will handle it.
Fire wire is much quicker (no latency,)and 8 i/o's. you are correct maybe 2 at a time on usb port.
1 if you are monitoring what you have already recorded through your break out box.

I think I just figured it out....

I have......

AMD Athlon 64 processor 3200
2.20 GHz
1.00 GB RAM
106 GB on one hard drive (free space)
and 4.35 on the other

Will this run the lexicon?

yes it will. I hate AMD for recording.
I have had nothing but problems.
It may be better now.
I think I had thunderbird AMD then it was ok as long as I recorded all tracks at the same time, when I recorded more tracks on the song I had phantom pops and clicks show up in the tracks. go to that link I posted, they are home recording guru's. I'm just a novice.

While you guys fuss about gigs and rams and soundcards I just plug into my Boss-BR1600 and hit record. 'course it's probably only good for demos.

Nah I use a Roland. LOL

Check out the first song on the bands page...I recorded it at practice I over dubbed the guitar cuz it was weak, then I had to pull the main track during the lead to bring down the previous lead. I was using roland drums and tracked them seperate. PLanning on recording everbody seperately, and making a decent demo with it.
It was supposed to be a scratch track, and it came out pretty decent. Turn down your sub cuz I got carried away with the low end when I was eq'ing. LOL

Sweet stuff man. I bet your Roland and my Boss are very similar in recording aspects. I may have to come see you guys.

sweet.
my roland is the old 188o model.
I love it. I wish the inputs were all xlr with 1/4".
There is only 2 xlr in's, the rest are 1/4", but I make do.
That was a live mix I did at practice, i had to over dub the guitar cuz it was buried.
He didn't play the same lead, and you can hear the bleed over from the live track.
We are working on recording everything a track a time, got the drums, bass, and some keys down now.
Should have a EP by christmas, with a few originals on it.
We are at the Stage Coach in Ocean Springs fri, and sat.
Hopefully we won't bore ya, if ya come by.
LOL
