Drools

Modulus VJ (pre-Quantum)

I owned a fretless, but for whatever reason after the 5th fret was out of tune, so I sold it.
I don't like the bridge there but it original.

wow, that Modulus is nice. Wonder if it's figured Koa or Walnut. Walnut's my fav.
I always thought a fretless Mod would be cool. I had graphite neck basses, but never a fretless.

I had a fretless Conklin GT7 for a while, that thing was a beast! Cool tone, more possibilities string-wise than I could keep up with.

Also had a Fender J fretless with an epoxied maple fingerboard, that was a nice one.

Those are two beauties there, B

They are on ebay.
I think the modulus is walnut.

Wayne, I have played a carvin once.
It was a six string and it was like my JB player, like playing a large tree limb.
I can't rate them properly, but you can pick a used one up fairly reasonable.
I'd rate them up with the top end peaveys.

Get the ibanex sr 505 5 string w/bartolinis i have the 506. the bang for the funk is worth every dime.
I got the 6 string for 650 with a case at MMI

I've had several Carvins, and our bassist uses a Carvin 6 that he modded to a 5-string on gigs occasionally (mostly because he doesn't want to bring his NICE basses)

I would never again buy a Carvin new, it's just not a good deal. They're 'ok' used.
They tend to be a little tame/blah/sterile- their pickups don't have a lot of personality.
The quality is good, the necks are SUPER thin and the options have improved over the years.

I still have a 4-string Carvin fretless (wired stereo) that was my graduation present; it's held up very well.
But I would say from experience that the recent Carvins are OK at best.
You can get a LOT more bang for your buck these days.

If you know what you like and have specs in mind, I'd recommend a few custom builders that can offer way more at a similar pricepoint to a new Carvin:
http://www.lecomptebass.com Played these at NAMM a while back, Bud L knows what he's doing. Great work.
http://www.fbbcustom.com I own a bunch of these, several built to my specs. This guy knows wood and I've never heard fatter tones. He made me my dream 4-string- still haven't played a bass I like better.

If you HAVE to go off-the-rack, my preference these days would be G&L, they're like Fenders on steroids. I've got an ASAT that is a monster! Im not a huge fan of most other big brands these days.

I'm not to big on humbuckers on basses.(G&L, MM stingray, and some ibanez's)
Great for metal where you need more growl.

Depends on what tonal qualities you are looking for, and what style of music you are playing.

I had a conklin 6 GT and it was a funkmaster.
It had bartolini's in it that were the shyt for doing funk.
It weighed 20+ #'s

I only dig 'em when you can split them like on the G&L's; that way you've got either single coil individually, or the full deal if you need over the top punch.
