Recording Acoustic Guitar

I am looking for any good ideas on two subjects.

1. I am recording a song with fast acoustic strumming (think Pinball Wizard by the Who). How do I minimize the pick noise? I've have tried stiff picks. I've tried really flexible picks. I even tried one of those felt picks. And still I get a lot of the click of the pick striking the strings. Any ideas?

2. When recording a finger-picked acoustic guitar how do you minimize the sound of your fingers striking the strings? Obviously fingernails help but do any of you have any other tips?

Sounds like a pretty aggressive attack on both accounts with open air hot-mics. Are you primarily an electric player?

I use a hot condenser mic about 6-12 inches from the base of the fret board, and record it direct from a built in bridge pizeo pic up.

theres probably only a couple hundred different answers on this...try something, and if you dont like it try something else basically.

And what format are you recording into. DAW, computer, four track...

Try
different mic placements at different angles, even different mics. sometimes the best sounding shit comes from the weirdest setups.
try putting a piece of foam in front of where your strumming in between the mic and guitar. just make sure your getting some direct sound to the mic from the guitar without all the strumming noise. Even some creative compression and some fancy computer plug-in effects could single out those freq. that are coming from your strumming...

to name a few

Nylon picks carry a softer contact.

You can also take the strum attack out in post with a fine tuned noise cancellation or a careful eq job.

I play primarily acoustic and am recording into a Roland 16 track hard disk recorder.

I've been experimenting with mic placement (a large condenser mic) and have noticed that it does sound better with the mic about 12 inches out pointed at where the body meets the neck or even further up the neck (pointed too close to the soundhole and it gets boomy too quick).

Have tried playing soft versus hard and actually soft results in more pick noise. I think it is relative to the level of the actual guitar sound. In other words it sounds fine when I record but when I raise the levels high enough to hear the guitar the pick attack is noisier than if I just would have played harder and not had to raise the level on the recorded guitar.

I appreciate the feedback and will definitely try the EQ suggestions. I know it is going to be pretty high in the EQ spectrum. Any particular frequencies you'd focus on? If any of you have any other ideas let me know.

i would try a sm57 on it. teh Audix OM-2 mic has a good high frq. response, good for crispy acoustic sounds. Or any other dynamic mic. nothing fancy, nothing that will pick up the neighbors dog taking a leak across the street...

unless you have proper outboard gear to compliment your large condenser mic, you might get unwanted results....hence this thread...lol

For recording acoustic instruments in the highest quality, you'll want to use a condenser microphone rather than a dynamic microphone. Good condenser microphones for acoustic guitar recording include the Oktava......
