Thats my two cents on the scene.

This thread is questioning WHY there are so many people and bands on the coast and the number of people here are slim.
Sure its the same 15-20 people, some get mad and leave for whatever reason, most here are friends to some extent.

Why aren't there more poeple here?

Do you think that most people who catch shows regularly are aware of this board? If they are, maybe clubgoers are just mostly not the same people who like messageboards. Personally I don't get out much and this place gives me an idea of what's going on, but do people who are out and about every weekend need it?

And do people who frequent this board tell others about it? Seems that word of mouth is needed to increase traffic here or at any other site.

Last night I had somebody walk up to me in a club we were playing and knew me through this board.

He said "i don't go on there (gcb) anymore cuz i don't like ____ _____.
I said I'm sorry I can't help that.
The guy, and his g/f stuck around cuz he had never heard us play, and must have enjoyed us because I don't think I bought a beer all night.
I did buy them a few rounds, so...

I agree with the word of mouth thing.
I tell people about GCB daily.
Its what members need to do to build this place up.

A sad effect of message boards is that people get upset about things that I don't think would bother them in person, where they could see the other person's body language and know they're just teasing or playing. The great thing about spending time at Metal Sludge's board is that you develop a think skin there. You can't post anything there without somebody flaming you. After awhile you just don't give a damn when somebody gives you some crap.

Anyway, sorry I ran that guy off!

Nope. I used to blame the casinos.
Its getting back to the way it once was.
The only people that go to casinos NOW are tourists.
The new has worn off.
Some locals go to the local joints to sip a few brew, and check out the local bands.
I like playing the high dollar casino gigs.
They treat you, and pay you well.
Don't let them catch you drinking before you are to go on.
They don't tolerate it.
YOU are an employee.
More local acts should try to get in casinos.

There is actually a pretty good scene around here IMO.
There are alot of deferent genres and bands. Hell I just found out about 3 or 4 new bands in OS that I didn't even know existed....
and they are all good!

The problem is.......
There just aint no place to play.

Let me take that back....
there are FEW places to play depending on your market.
Cover bands have more choices than most.

Bert's exactly right, you have to make your own scene around here.
The band I'm in plays some dumps! But the pepople pack it out and we get paid so on and so on.

It doesn't take much to find a place or two to play. Just go on myspace and be prepared to drive 3 or 4 hours.

leave no stone unturned.
every place is a suspect, you have to mark the venues off the list one at a time, the ones that you don't mark off are prospective gigs.
then deliver a decent promo/media pack, and follow up.
there are more venues than you think.
