Spotlight ArtistOf The Week 10/14/08-Lojah

Lojah (pronounced Lô-juh) was born as Jay Moody to a large, Creek Indian and Scots-Irish family from Pensacola, Florida. Growing up in a military family, Lojah lived on all three U.S. coasts, something that resonates in his accent and his style. From a young age Lojah was driven to creativity with music and visual arts as his focus. Being brought up on music like Bob Marley, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Ramones, Beastie Boys, Kiss and Bob Dylan had quite an effect on the aspiring musician. He began writing lyrics at and early age and when he was thirteen with his father’s encouragement picked up the guitar to start building melodies. By the time Lojah turned eighteen he had played in a folk rock duo called Foster Child and a punk band called Disinherited. As he matured Lojah found himself gravitating toward the meaning behind Reggae. Hearing the strong message of the Rastafarian movement, Lojah recognized the ‘shanty towns’ of Jamaican lyric as similar to the situations of poverty on Indian Reservations in the United States. Lojah is a dedicated adherent to the Opvnkv Haco (Muskogee Stomp Dance Religion), a student of anthropology and actively works in archeology in order to help protect the ancient sites of his ancestors. He seeks to encourage a life in balance with the natural environment while celebrating the finer points of creation. Lojah featured with Shadowyze on his 2001 SOAR-- release, Spirit Warrior with Disinherited performing the song Pedigree. This song received radio air play throughout North America and was on the Midnight Dread Sound System at Reggae on the River in 2001, 2003. In 2006 Lojah teamed up with DJ Dev of Devistatin’ Music; (production engineer of 400 degrees by Juvenile). The single Flow within one month of its release charted in the Top 50 on Dixie Dance Kings Pop Urban Ads and won a Listener’s Choice Award for Best Beat in Alternative Pop July 10. 2006. In 2007 the demo version of Alone by the Sea won song of the day in Reggae on May 3rd 2007 Best Male Vocals in Reggae, week of 28May2007, Best Mood in Reggae, week of 28May2007 on garageband.com A versatile performer and song-writer, Lojah performs with his own band and is a supporting member of Shadowyze’s performing act. He has played his music from the Gulf of Mexico to Monterey Bay and in 2007 Lojah decided to bring his style back home to the live swamp sounds of his native Florida, teaming up with two friends, drummer Phillip and bassist Andy Nelson. with influences ranging from the Marley’s to the Ramones, Lojah's style ranges between creolized, danceable grooves with distinct Caribbean elements and a southern punk rock delivery. His lyrical content revolves around culturally sensitive down-to-earth social commentary and spiritual insights woven together with tongue-in-cheek witticism and a festive vibe.
