1. "Shout at the Devil"- Motley Crue. It totally got me out of the "Michael Jackson" phase every preteen was in at the time.
2. "Appetite for Destruction"- Guns N' Roses. I had just gotten a cassette player/recorder with AM and FM and some blank tapes for Christmas. All day I was listening to a rock station out of Phoenix and waiting to catch an Aerosmith song because I'd always heard that they were Motley Crue's favorite band. When I heard the intro to "Welcome to the Jungle" I hit "record" right away. They weren't Aerosmith they were much meaner! I think I didn't actually find out who they were until we moved to a place that had cable. When I finally saw their video, I thought they were they ugliest fuckers on the planet. But, I still liked their music.
3. "Ritual de lo Habitual"- Jane's Addiction. I remember C&C music factory being played on MTV all the time. The "rock" bands at the time were all doing their best Motley Crue impersonations. Music was just lame. Worse than it is today.
I was actually starting to like the Cure and some bands I can't remember, but they just didn't rock enough. Thank you, Dave Navarro!
4. "Nevermind"- Nirvana. Jane's Addiction started me down the alternative rock path. I was getting into Sonic Youth, the Pixies, the Jesus and Mary Chain, but, I still liked metal. But, at the time, metal was kind of cut and dry sounding or on the other extreme, overproduced. I saw a news clip on MTV news about Sonic Youth and the piece also mentioned Nirvana as their opener. I heard a little snippet and liked it, so I waited up all night to see them on 120 minutes, MTV's alt/rock show. I was blown away and wished that was my high school! I didn't want to buy the album, though. The week before, I bought Ned's Atomic Dustbin and it really sucked. So I waited another week and bought something else instead. The second week I saw them on Headbanger's Ball and Kurt was wearing the dress. I thought that was hilarious so I just KNEW I had to get the album.
5. "the Joshua Tree"- U2. I always hated U2 in the 80's. But around 1999, I started to get bored with my guitar playing (power chords can only take you so far) and wanted to get more melodic without "shredding". I think a U2 Greatest Hits was out and you'd hear U2 every now and then on the classic rock station (when they weren't playing Foghat). I picked up a used cd and have been a U2 fan ever since.
