Equipment/electronic tech geek question

Sorry I didn't want to put this in the band only section.
There might be an e tech that might have some input to my question(s).

I just aquired a mesa boogie diesel 2x10. Best I can figure its about 1985-1990 model, originally set up at 300 w 8 ohms.
Everything in it is blown.
I have 2 - 10" 8 300 8 ohm watt eminence speakers.
I bought the original tweeter that came with it. 300 w 8 ohm.
I will be running the cabinet at 600 w @ 4 ohms.

My question is...

Should I...

1. go with an inline capacitor to protect the tweeter? (thats the way the cabinet was set up)
if so which one?
2. build/buy a crossover to run the cabinet response where I want?
where do you think would be a good x-over point?
3. modernize it, and buy a new mesa player control that comes on all new bass cabinets?
which totally kicks ass, but mesa probably wants an arm an a leg for.

I googled and found this thread

http://forum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.php?p=144664

Dont' know if it'll help, but it may steer you in the right direction. I wish I knew more about bass amps and crossovers...

Thanks Steve!
Asa proud Mesa owner,
I'm already on there...

I didn't get much response.

The most help I got was from Parts Express.

http://www.partsexpress.com

I was told to use a 3.2 uf filter (capacitor) or lower, that if I got one that allowed the tweeter to get to the mid range and stay there too long I would fry the tweeter, which bass amps are common to be in the mid frequency alot.

I just checked my cap collection I have a 3.0uF/400V poly cap if you want it... PM me if you're interested.

sure if its bi-polar (un-polarized), I ordered 2 - 2.7uF 100v, but I think that the voltage is inadequate.
I hate to fry a tweet finding out.
so far as crossovers is concerned ...correct me if I'm wrong that the cap in line would be a first order x-over right?

I could use a polarized one and run it from the + to the - leads to the tweet.
I have printed out everything I read, then some.
There is no wonder why E Techs, and EE's are such geeks, their mind is so clouded with that stuff, and its deep, real deep.
This site helped alot... http://www.colomar.com/Shavano/crossover6db.html
I have researched too much for one capacitor.
It made my head hurt.
LOL

I'm inbetween a tech and an EE... my job title is Engineeering Tech, and that Shavano site has been a point of reference for years... I guess you can say I'm geek of sorts

You know what's weird, that first thread I sent you from the boogie board, the poster is a friend of mine, so is the guitar player, Taylor Harvey. I have 3 of the THB cds I just noticed when I went back to the thread.... small world!!

Anyway, as far as crossovers go, I've never messed around with them much. The concept is simple enough. As far as your cab is concerned, if you're going to try to get it back to it's original setup, a schematic of that particular crossover would be really beneficial. When you said everything was "blown", do you mean it was fried? Can you tell if it looked anything like this

The capacitor I have is non-polarized, it looks like the ones in the pic above.

It didn't have a xover in it.
First order with an insufficient cap on on the tweet.
I would like to build a second order x-over like the one you have in that pic.
The tweet and one speaker was blown. Worn out is a better word for both 10's.One crackled so bad it sounded like popcorn, the other wasn't in much better shape.
If they would have been ev's I would have had them recoiled/reconed.
From what I could tell they were 100 w 16 ohm eminence.
When I ordered my mesa 6x10 I requested Ev's

I'll pm you my addy, I'll pay ya for it and the postage.

I'd love to have a second order x over in it.
If i knew exacly what components I needed where its crossed over and sounds best...thats what I want.
I can see by that coil its probably custom wound.
The resisitor before with white cap is for the lows,
and the yellow is for the highs.
Simple enough RIIIGHT... I can put it together, just getting the right frequency x'd over.
