Hog Wild fest next weekend
The Mitchell Company's sixth annual Barbecue Championship and Hog Wild Festival promises a wealth of entertainment March 9-10 at the Greater Gulf State Fairgrounds in west Mobile.
More than 80 professional teams will compete for more than $20,000 grand prize. Additionally, amateur teams will have their own "Pro-Am" and "Shade Tree" competitions.
Aside from watching people cook, there will be plenty else to do. Highlights:
Lonestar (whose hits include "Tequila Talkin'" and "My Front Porch Looking In") will headline a concert starting at 7:30 p.m. March 10. The show also features special guest Blake Shelton, whose No. 1 country hits include "Some Beach" and "Austin." Tickets are $25 in advance, available through Ticketmaster, and $35 at the gate; prices include weekend admission to the festival.
An extensive children's area will be open from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 9 and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. March 10. Family attractions include pig racing and a NASCAR display.
The Mystics of Swine Parade, billed as west Mobile's only Mardi Gras parade, takes place at 6:30 p.m. March 9. Also that evening, the "Alabama Blues Brothers" will perform.
Additional entertainment on March 10 includes barrel racing rodeo action and a BayFest battle of the bands, in which groups will compete for the chance to play a major stage at BayFest 2007.
Festival admission alone (without Lonestar concert admission) is $7 per day, at the gate, with children 12 and under admitted free. Adult weekend passes are $10, available at all BankTrust locations.
The event benefits United Cerebral Palsy.
