Rep Power: 18 | | | We're studying the cardiovascular system in one of my classes right now. I always knew that somehow smoking led to heart disease, etc. I never knew exactly what went on though.
When you smoke, tobacco/nicotine cause a higher rate of plaque and cholesterol build-up in blood vessels. This, as you know, leads to blockage, causing heart attack, stroke, etc. Unless by way of surgical intervention, this plaque stays there, no matter if you quit smoking, exercise daily, or eat healthy. It doesn't decrease or go away. Just something to think about; it's got me thinking.
I also learned that females are almost 50 times more likely to die from heart disease rather than breast cancer, which is what we all are deathly afraid of, correct? In today's world, there are more female smokers than male, probably due to the belief that smoking will help us lose weight. |

I ask because when I took classes for heart-healthy cooking at Kaiser Permanante back in 1998, the teacher referred to Dr. Dean Ornish, who claims that you CAN reduce arterial plaque if you cut to a diet of 10% fat or less, monounsaturated fats only.
At the time, which is now almost 10 years ago, his wortk was not widely accepted, but he did apparently have patients who demonstrated up to a 25% reduction in arterial plaque by following such a diet and moderate exercise.
I wonder if he's been vindicated or discredited, or is still hanging on the fringe? Any idea? |

Rep Power: 18 | | | I haven't heard of this guy you're talking about. This goes for non-smokers too. From what I've read, diet, exercise, and supplements only reduce the plaque build-up's progression. But if you find out otherwise, I'd like to know, so that I can ask my instructor. |

Rep Power: 57 | | | I started Chantix today. My quit date for smoking is next Monday. I know two other people on this medication and they have quit. I'll see. |

Rep Power: 32 | | | I've gotten down to about two a day unless I'm drinking. So, I'm doing pretty good. I read something the other day though that said that even social smoking can be VERY bad for you so I REALLY want to quit all together.

Rep Power: 18 | | | Another fact:
Smoker's cough is a form of bronchitis. That coughing is caused by the little hairs (cilia) in your respiratory tree deadening and not being able to keep up with the cinders and debris you inhale when smoking. What you're coughing up are mucous and pus. How elegant is that? | | |
