| I am convinced that the timeshare business is crooked As if this wasn't already a known fact. Me and my gf are planning a short vacation this weekend in Destin, FL. While trying to book a hotel online, I clicked on a link that offered 4days/3nights at a 4 star hotel for $249, which was a great deal. I wondered what the catch was, so I gave them my information, they called me the next day. I told the lady the dates I wanted, and she booked my a room at a hotel across the street from the beach. She informed me that in order to cancel this reservation, I had to do so at least 4 days in advance, so I had to be absolutely sure I wanted it since it was Monday and the reservation was for Friday. I told her that I was indeed sure. I gave her my credit card info and she went over a couple more details about the hotel and how I was getting a $50 gift certificate that I could use at several different restaurants. Then right as I thought everything ready, she tells me at the end that we are required to attend a 2-hour presentation for Wyndham. I asked her was this about a timeshare and she said yes. I though, oh great, they suckered me in and they are gonna grill me to the bone about buying one of these things if I go. So I said fine, whatever, we'll just go, say no, and leave.
Well today I got a call from them saying the reservation was canceled due to the hotel being overbooked. The person on the phone asked me if I wanted to select another date. I told them no, just cancel the whole thing. It was as if the person didn't even hear me. He kept telling me how he could get me a great hotel and how much money I would save and blah blah blah. Finally a few minutes later I convinced him that I would just book another hotel myself, and I asked him not to charge my credit card. He informed me that my card had already been charged, but he could give me a refund. He put me on hold for about 6 minutes, then finally came back to tell me he put in my request for a refund, and that the money would be refunded in about 10 business days.
About 5 years ago in Myrtle Beach, SC, I went to a presentation because some guy on the street practically begged me to go and ended up offering us a check for $150 if we just went. Long story short, a few days after we got home, someone from the timeshare property called me as if I had actually bought from them, and told me that yes I signed and agreed to purchase, when clearly I didn't. I argued on him for 15 minutes until he hung up on me because he said I was trying to catch him in something by twisting his words around. I had to actually have an attorney send them a letter to get me out of the whole deal.
I hate these people. I think anytime I hear anything to do with timeshares I will turn my head and run the other direction.
