Rep Power: 56 | | | Image vs. Music -- Your Thoughts Here's a question I pose to all of you. What is more important in the current state of marketing a band...the music or the image of the band?
Is Panic! at the Disco selling millions of albums because they make genuinely good music or because people think that they are cute and have a circus-style gimmick? Let's say that someone who is not as marketable to the Fall Out Boy crowd, like Bert McCracken, was the lead singer of this band; would they still be successful? How can a band that has lyrics often about sexual activities be so successful with such a young audience? |

Rep Power: 49 | | | at the end of the day, the music has to be good....i realize that precedents have been set to the contrary ie new kids on the block. but first and foremost, if the music isnt good, the image wont matter for very long.
as for panic at the disco, they make good music, whether you like them or not, they have good music.
as for the lyrics about sexual activities....thats a no brainer....thats all young people think about, so of course its gonna do well

Rep Power: 42 | | | I would say that most bands are image driven. I heard girl say one night (about another band) "I saw the studded belts and mascara and knew they were my kind of band.) made me a bit sick to hear that. Younger crowds are looking for a way to be different and still fit it...personally I think that is what emo is about; let's all be different so we can be the same. I know back in the day(yeah fuck you, I'm old) I didn't listen to any bands that didnt have long hair. If they had makeup I thought that they were poseurs and refuse to give it a chance. It seems rather similar now in that respect. |

Rep Power: 50 | | | It's always been the same. Didn't Metallica catch shit because they cut their hair? It's still Metallica, just short hair.
I think it's mostly on image. |

Rep Power: 50 | | | Well as the question was what is more important in the marketing aspect of bands, the answer is obviously image. Because you can't really market a sound, imo.
But from a personal perspective, I feel the current trend of band popularity reflects only the need for certain lyrical mentionings involving things like crazy bitches and ass smacking; merely cheap thrills designed to turn a profit for the short term but resulting in a "where are they now" in the long term. And when I say long term on this topic I mean a period of 2-3 weeks later.
Whatever happened to Puddle of Mudd anyway? They walked off the world, that's what. It's funny, when they were popular I worked for the coast nightlife observer, and I interviewed the Puddle of Mudd guitarist. He had a lot to say about the importance of having an original sound. I wonder if that was before or after he wrote the riffs for Rape Me... err... She Fucking Hates Me.

Sure, ask BEN!!! *winks
ZZ Top, Aerosmith, ect. How do you think those bands would fair if they came out today? Not so well. And the people that pay the $150 bucks to go see them were the fans of old, certainly not new fans. |

It's not about the music.
If it were, the music on the radio would be worth a shit.
There are a TON of bands out there that have awesome music.
They don't get signed until they throw on some revlon, lip gloss, and sing in a fake british acsent.
It's not about the music anymore. | | |
