They attempt to gain a rudimentary understanding of their instrument. After they accomplish that (in their eyes, at least), they listen intensely to what's on the radio and engage in some serious copying action. Then they get signed and hit #1! And these are the people in charge of making Rock music for the public, so why should you be expecting anything great?
What people don't realize is that #1 in rock is getting lower and lower everyday. Look at the Billboard Charts and marvel at the lack of Rock acts on it. Every band that follows the above formula twists the knife a little more. If you think that the major labels won't drop Rock music like it's hot altogether then you're lying to yourself.
But that's not saying that Rock'll die. Because you know it will not. Instead, it will flourish like never before, with the promise of riches gone from the equation. Only the real artists will step forward, and the poseurs will all be gone. And I'll finally get serious about my day job. So here's to the popular death of Rock 'n Roll!

This then travels overseas and a couple of lads in Liverpool begin to do just that. They get with a manager who then cultivates their look and then BOOM...the next big thing is out. Now, does this mean that the music of the Beatles or Elvis was bad? No, because they still had to be good to keep people coming back. I only use these as references to show how long this has been going on. I don't think it's any different now than it was then. There's just more of it and it's magnified even more. Some bands' image is that they have no image (Tool). Or, their image is tied to another image (Phish to the Dead). Music and image are always going to be symbiotic one way or another. I don't like how someone will judge a band on how they look, that's just closed-minded one way or another, but I think it's unavoidable because people like identification. If a band looks a certain way that they can identify with they are more apt to gravitate towards that band whether the music is good or not. It's the responsibility of the artist or band to deliver the goods. The good ones will continue to flourish while the ones that are all image will fade away. |

Check this out. I don't think to be a true musician you have to have a knowledge of names or conventions regarding music. There are so many good players that haven't taken a lesson in their life and can write and play excellent music. I agreed with most of what you said, just not that little line.
