I honestly do not have my presidential platform figured out (yet

) but I do know one thing for sure:
Sitting on your behind complaining from a keyboard does nothing unless you actually inspire people to get out and do something. Same goes for "inspirational ramblings". Words are meant to inspire, not satisfy.
Of course there are all of the well known ways to "make a difference" or "give back" such as Habitat for Humanity, Boys and Girls Clubs, Big Brother/Sister, Coastal Clean-up, auxillary support for politicians, soup kitchens, Sierra Club, Peace Corp. etc. etc.
Getting involved on a local level produces tangible results. Right now those of us on the Gulf Coast have an incredible and unprecedented opportunity to improve life in every aspect. Find something that inspires you - conservation, the arts, living history, affordable housing, roadways, healthcare, transportation, etc. and get involved. The What's Happening section of the SunHerald lists all public hearings/planning meetings and there is always something going on. I have attended at least a dozen of these across the coast and I'll tell you the truth: most of the time I am the youngest person in there by about 20 years.
Decide what means something to you and your future, do a little research and GET OUT THERE. Be a part of the first "new American Cities" to be built from the infrastructure up in the last 150 years! Be a part of a National example that may inspire others to improve life on their local levels. Help this area shake its stereotypes and become an example for community involvement.
Idealistic? You bet. I cannot imagine the alternative.
