Smile New guitar (a bass!)

I've got over a dozen guitars, but no bass. This is an Ibanez 4001 copy from 1977. A buddy of mine bought it in Tuscaloosa over 10 years ago on a whim, and it's been in the closet ever since. I guess he finally decided to give her up, and I'm the new owner. This is what they call a "lawsuit" Ibanez, which makes it somewhat collectible. I've since cleaned it up, restrung and set it up, but have yet to plug it into anything. Reviews say it really sounds like a Ric even with the bolt-on neck.

I think I'm gonna join a rock n roll band.

Woot!

it's in 'Tony Levin' mode in the pic, eh?

I played one of those years ago, seems like it was pretty close to the tone and feel of a Ric. Rics are pretty cool, but I've played a few that were real dogs. Like any model I guess. We've got a tobacco-sunburst model in the studio, I forget what they call that color (not sure if they make it anymore)

Sounds like "Mapleglo".

I had to settle for EB strings for now. I really wanted some Rotosound ss for it.

I've got guitar fingers so it may take a few hours or more to get used to it. I'll take it over to the PA today or tomorrow and plug it in.

strange, I've been searching the site and can't find a pic of a Ric in this same color. It's like a Fireglo burst, but with a brown fade, there's no red- it's like amber to brown fade. Wonder if they did a custom job for him. Now I gotta find out! (after some google image searching, I'd say it's either Autumnglo or Montezuma brown, neither of which are available now)

Yep, those rickies are made for Rotos- what a sound!
I find DRs are similar, or Warwick Black labels.
I bought a bunch of the gold strings John Entwistle used to use on ebay once, they were pretty zingy too, but it's hard to beat good ole Rotos.

let me know if you get that thing recorded, I'd like to hear it.
I think we may have snuck the mystery Ric onto our upcoming album somewhere

Will do, I've never seriously considered learning bass but this could change everything.

I wanted Rotos and will get some soon.

As far as color, all I know is Ric changed colors every year, so knowing when it was made could help in identifying it.

Thanks man

According to Wiki it is a rare collector.

The EBs are coming around, smoothing out some.

cool! It's addictive though, I gotta warn you.
A couple years ago I focused mainly on bass. I haven't played much the last few years, and I miss it a lot. The focus is very different from guitar, even though the physics are similar. I bet you're going to dig it

This is a pretty cool internet resource for bass, I used to hang out there a lot:

I'm with Mark on this one man...
You are going to dig playing the bass.
Google "Bass players"
There are so many sites for any thing you want to know about playing the bass.
I love to plug that baby into my mesa boogie.

I've got a friend with an Ampeg V4B and the 2X15 cab. That would be fun.

My right index and middle are a little tender today
