ehh too muddy, and not enough tone-age for me.
you are welcome to come by the house next time you are headed to mobile, and see what I'm talking about.
give em a rest. much against my musical religion to use a pick, but use one so you don't get blisters.
they are a bitch to heal up.

Steverino thinks they are the cool kid
I remember a friend back in the 80s told me to put the pick away when it comes to bass. I have used a pick now and then and I do like the edgier sound not to mention the extra speed. Did Chris Squire use a pick?

I believe He did.
I use a pick on 2 songs for that reason. Speed.
I can do it as fast with my fingers but you can produce a sharper sound with the pick.

Yep, Squire uses pick almost exclusively. I believe Cliff Burton (metallica's original bassist) did too. Both were Ric users too, come to think of it...
Plectrum is just another tool in your arsenal; it's good to know if you need it. They make big felt picks if you want a softer attack, not as clicky. Or you can roll off some highs. As long as you think like a bassist and not a guitarist you can find the pocket even with a pick. (not that I'm advocating it)

wait till you discover fretless!

we've got some custom bass-based instruments coming from a Dutch luthier soon, the first one's done and almost ready to ship. It's pretty funky.

dangit! You guys are getting me jonesin' for bass again!
Should we do another Bass Summit for the gulf coast? Last one was fun.

I let my bass player take her for a spin last night at practice. He loved it to say the least. The action is a tad higher than his Jazz bass, so I'm going to try to lower it a little. It's way hotter than the Jazz for sure and with some SS rounds will nail the Chris Squire tone.

F that.
Why not create a Steverino tone?

I've always had a vision per se what I think the bass guitar is supposed to sound like.
Most players play with all of their eq cranked all the way to the right and rip off the knobs.
Not so fast you young buckeroos.
Roll the mids all the way out, and your lows and highs about 1 o'clock (eq at 12 o'clock on the amp). The end result is a much cleaner tone.
