Saddest Songs in the World

http://www.spinner.com/2007/05/03/th...e-world-no-25/

This list is pretty good as sad songs go, but I'm sure there are others that are glaring omissions.

Focus: What are the other excrutiatingly sad songs out there and what are your personal stories behind them, if there are any?

Last Kiss ~ Wayne Cochran (covered by Pearl Jam). Story of a horrific car accident in which several teens are killed. Inspired by a true story where a sixteen year old girl was killed in a car accident while on a date.

The Freshman ~ Verve Pipe. Similar to Brick, the singer's real life (ex) girlfriend had an abortion. In the song she goes on to commit suicide.

Speculum ~ Adema. Another abortion tale, this time about a band mate's girlfriend who had an abortion without ever informing him she was pregnant. When he found out about it later he lamented his lost child.

Betterman ~ Pearl Jam. Story about a women who is being beaten by her significant other but cannot leave him.

Pool Shark ~ Sublime. It's a song about Bradley's losing battle with heroin addiction. Especially sad knowing that the heroin ultimately killed him.

Chasing Cars ~ Snow Patrol. If you have ever been torn from someone you love, or had time run out for you or a loved one, this song will have you bawling like a baby.

Bad Diary Days ~ Pedro the Lion. It's a song about a guy finding out his girlfriend is cheating on him.

4 AM ~ Our Lady Peace. About a guy who has a bad relationship with his father, but is awoken at 4 AM to learn his father's dying and he realizes how much time he's wasted. This song really gets to me.

I would have put Gloomy Sunday as number one...

this isn't in any order, btw...

Vanishing Act by Lou Reed. Mostly it's the music that tugs on the ol' heart strings. But it really just reminds me of all the times I wish I could...well...Vanish.

Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley. Of course, it's in Shrek which is where I heard it first. Music, voice and lyrics. Very moving.

Mad World by Gary Jules. Need I say more? I can't help but feel sad every time I hear it.

Whiskey Lullabye by Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss. Oh, I can't help it...Such a traic song.

Fly Away by Poe. "Everything matter in such an invisable way. As if to say it's ok...."

The Child Is Gone by Fiona Apple. It's about abortion or miscarriage...one of the two.

that's about all for now...i'm getting distracted!

Alison Krauss does a few sad tunes, "Maybe" being one of them.

"The Long and Winding Road" by the Beatles comes to mind too.

Cat's In the Cradle was the first song that popped into my mind. Followed closely by Tim McGraw's Don't Take the Girl.

The one that came to mind for me was
"Careless Whisper" by Wham or maybe it was just George Michael, just so sad!
