I was born to play bass. | It took years for me to get feel for lead. Kept at it for years, one bend or note at a time. I'm still at it, still not too good, but improving. I've been a rhythm guy all my life, striving to be a lead player, and now I'm getting to where I can mix and match, but rhythm is my thing and I don't mind saying I'm pretty damn good at it.
I take exception to the implied notion that guitarists, especially rhythm guitarists somehow don't have the timing abilities that a bassist or drummer have. A good rhythm guy is a valuable asset to any good band. And I say this with no malice to the OP And my contribution to the jokes:
How many lead guitarists does it take to change a light bulb?
Just one, he holds the bulb and world revolves around him. |

Rep Power: 26 | | Wait, that's not a joke, that's the true answer!
But seriously. bass is really a different instrument. I have a natural feel for lead guitar and am a good rhythm player as well. I can play bass, but I don't have the feel of a true bassist as I think of it. However, knowing scales is a big advantage in playing the bass. I have freaked out a few longtime bassists by just playing the major scale runs in "Immigrant Song". What a cool lick, but it's just A, B, C major scales with a chromatic on the G string at the end.
But I can't do any funk stuff at all, no slapping or popping stuff; way too whitebread for that. My best song I can play on bass is probably YYZ by Rush as far as difficulty level.
But being a lead player, I have trouble playing straight 1/8 notes following the chord progression, which is so often what you actually need to do. Musical ADHD?

Rep Power: 26 | | Got a Rickanez, eh? Sweet! I just have a Yamaha RBX264 and an Electra Jazz Bass copy. The Jazz copy looks and sounds sweet but the neck is a log! The Yamaha sounds okay but has a sweet neck! Better for a whiny guitar player to cope with!
My badass bass rig consists of a ZOOM 506 processor! Hey, for $25 used I get 24 different, mostly okay to cool, sounds along with a chromatic tuner. Nothing to brag about but you can record with it and run it into the board live if you have to. |

Rep Power: 21 | | That's cool, I don't have a bass amp, the only way I can enjoy the "rickenez" is to run into the board. Maybe one day... right now I'm having problems setting it up. The action is too high, at least to me it is. |

You can do that youself petty easily, just limit the adjustment to 1/4 turn of the rod at a time and let it sit for a day while the neck adjusts. You can Google "truss rod adjustment" to get a full tutorial and it's not something you need a tech to do.
The neck is probably overly bowed right now, so 1/4 turn to the right would straighten it some and lower the action. Or, if it's a bolt on neck the neck can sometimes need a shim at the back of the neck pocket to properly align it.
A lengthwise bow is easy to correct with a truss rod adjustment. If the neck is twisted from bass to treble, that's not an easy fix and usually means planing the fretboard to make it level again, or replacing the neck. Needless to say, you can't do those yourself if you're not a tech. |

Rep Power: 21 | | | I've tried to adjust with the truss rod, both directions, got it buzzing behind fretted notes and the other extreme. Sighting down the neck I'm beginning to think it needs a shim. It's got a bolt-on neck. |

Dwight at MMI in Mobile is an expert at adjusting stuff like that.
