Rep Power: 0 | | Good for her. Bush knows that he's the shittiest president ever. I mean really.. no other president has caused so many problems and been looked down upon and verbally bashed as much as he has. I fucking hate Bush with a passion. |

Rep Power: 49 | | | Stephanie, hate to burst your bubble, but there have been a few presidents who have been more "verbally bashed" and caused a lot more problems than Bush.
Two examples that spring to mind are Abraham Lincoln and Jimmy Carter.
Lincoln was called a "baboon" in the campaign in 1864. And it wasn't metaphorical. His opponent even had posters and based a large part of his campaign on a PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTIC of Lincoln (he was ugly). Furthermore the "hatred" of yourself and others PALES in comparison to that felt by well over HALF THE COUNTRY toward Lincoln. The south hated him for obvious reasons. Many in the north (Copperheads) hated Lincoln because they didn't want to fight to free black people and because he DID exercise unconstitutional powers (suspending habeas corpus etc). You guys think you hate Bush because he's tapping phones etc but Lincoln did FAR MORE the Bush ever thought of and the people who hated Lincoln weren't content to just come on the internet and post about it.
Jimmy Carter was BY FAR the most inept US President of the 20th century. Carter simultaneously managed to damn near destroy the US economy, US military, and US image in the world. His term was marked by rampant inflation coupled with high-ass interest rates (aka stagflation), our decrease in power relative to the Soviet Union and the Iran Hostage Crisis (aka US Pussies on Parade).
You may hate Bush and in this country that is your right, but you really should look at some CONTEXT. |

I guess I struck a nerve with someone that is pro-Bush. I find it entertaining.
Carter did definitely majorly screw some stuff up, but he also did quite a few good things as well. He helped the environment on a few levels (protecting land, energy, etc..) and he also appointed a lot of minorities to government jobs and helped the general public with jobs. But, Carter hasn't been president for 26 years.. so let me re-phrase.. "I hate Bush, and I think that (in my lifetime and most of the people that are under the age of 40) many others agree and they aren't looking at someone who hasn't been president since '81."
As for president Lincoln.. I'm not even going to touch that.
So perhaps my thoughtless use of "EVER" in my above posting was incorrect. Let's just take that word out and leave the rest. |

Rep Power: 49 | | | Well for someone who is so pro-Bush I have started more threads on this board calling for his impeachment than anyone here with the exception of Clone 9.
Name ONE good thing Carter did. Your comment about "helping the general public with jobs" is way off base. Unemployment under Carter was above ten percent. Currently it is at about 4 percent. Cater was a horrible president (nice guy and pretty good ex-president when he's not appeasing dictators like North Korea) but a horrible president.
You need not apologize (seriously or in jest) and you don't have to do a history research project before commenting on this thread. By the way, welcome to the board. If I come across as a smart ass..... well maybe I am sometimes but I when I see a generalized statement I often try to provide some context and see if I can change that person's view (aka "persuasion").
As for going back forty years you don't have to. In deference to the Clintonistas on this board who get their panties in a wad every time I mention him I used other examples. But Clinton was worse than Bush in pretty much EVERY WAY you guys criticize Bush.
Warmongerer - how about bombing civilians from 30,000 feet in Bosnia where we had absolutely NO NATIONAL INTEREST!
Liar - need I even go there.
Greedster - yep Clinton is invested in the SAME EXACT COMPANIES as Bush etc except he bashes them while making money from them (see big Pharmaceuticals).
Secrecy - oh let's see... 900 FBI files of political enemies in the White House basement in CLEAR VIOLATION OF FEDERAL LAW.
Buddhist monks (vow of poverty) "donating" $50,000 a pop in brown paper bags to Clinton's campaign in clear violation of FEDERAL CAMPAIGN LAW.
Sandy Burglar sticking CLASSIFIED documents dealing with Clinton's handling of terrorism down his pants at the National archives in CLEAR VIOLATION OF FEDERAL LAW.
Over 100 witnesses fleeing the country in advance of congressional hearings and the witnesses that did stay taking the 5th or "not remembering" (Hillary herself said that phrase over 140 times in ONE hearing)
I could literally go on for at least ten more pages but I'll spare you.
The point being if you look around it becomes a lot harder to say "the worst most verbally bashed president ever" of Bush. I support impeaching him for his Justice Dept's RAILROADING of our two border patrol agents but there are a lot of presidents (his predecessor for once) who were worse.
Of course some on this board will disagree. They just won't be able to argue it!!!!
As for Lincoln, if you get the time you really ought to read about him. I respect Lincoln because he was president at the HARDEST TIME IN US HISTORY to be President. He was a masterful orator and if you ever go to Washington you ought to read the Gettysburg address while standing in the Lincoln memorial. BUT he was quite HATED in his time and he did things so unconstitutional it wasn't funny. For example he locked up over 10,000 people in border states (mainly Maryland) without CHARGING THEM WITH ANYTHING. He shut down newspapers etc. It is interesting the read all of this keeping in mind his current reputation. |

I checked out some facts about Carter. It's interesting because it seems that he did try to do things he thought were good but that it caused problems in other areas in the end. Give and take, I suppose..
One of the things I came across in regard to the employment, etc:
" Carter worked hard to combat the continuing economic woes of inflation and unemployment. By the end of his administration, he could claim an increase of nearly eight million jobs and a decrease in the budget deficit, measured in percentage of the gross national product. Unfortunately, inflation and interest rates were at near record highs, and efforts to reduce them caused a short recession."
Who are you aside from this board? I'm curious if I know you. | | |
