Well that always was one of the greatest contradictions about the Civil War. We, in hindsight, respect Lincoln for fighting to keep the union together when, in fact, that was highly unconstitutional. I, BTW,am glad Lincoln kept the union together.

BUT, the constitution CLEARLY allowed for seccession. Furthermore THAT was one of the MAIN selling points for ratification of the Constitution. The Fedralists (pro constitution) made the argument that if a state ratified asnd then later discovered that they didn't like the Constitution, the state could always secede.

As for Vermont, on one hand I like the idea of shaking up the federal gov't and this would certainly do it but I'd bet that as soon as all that federal money disappears and the bong hits wear off most "Vermonters" are going to be sorely disappointed.

Plus (paraphrasing the movie "Canadian Bacon" with John Candy) you've got to watch those Canadians. Like the insidious maple syrup they export.....
