'Charge smokers for right to buy cigarettes' - Telegraph

That's right, this idiot in Britain is proposing that all smokers should have to pay 200 lbs per year to get a smoking license.

From the article:
The scheme would ensure smokers had to make a conscious decision to continue the habit and require people to become "registered addicts".

OK dumbass are you under the impression that some person was just minding their business and a cigarette SNUCK into their mouth and lit itself??? EVERY smoker on planet Earth has made a conscious decision to smoke.

Lest you think this guy wants to stop with smokers...

"Prof Julian le Grand, a former advisor to Tony Blair, floated the idea during a speech this week. He also proposed banning food manufacturers from adding salt to products, an exercise hour for all employees during the working day and free fruit in offices."

Oh and ps, it IS tempting to dismiss this as just another nutjob in Britain BUT this is EXACTLY what WE will get if we allow socialized medicine.

as much taxes as smokers pay there should be a lotto ticket that you get when you buy a carton... win a 10,000 smoker rebate this month...the only down fall is that you would have idiots start smoking to win that 10 grand.

as i drive around, i notice a mobile county pay as you go sign...
i always say, i paid for that road.

Well spert you are correct

but here's another little thought for you

When people do actually start to quit smoking (and if you tax it high enough many will) who is going to pay for the programs funded by tobacco tax revenues? For every smoker that quits you eliminate revenue. Who's going to pick up the slack?

That's right, non-smoking taxpayers.

I, BTW, don't have a problem with high tobacco taxes. But I don't think they should be used to fund what are supposed to be permanent programs.

And I think that those of you who think you are sticking it to the smokers had better think again. In the end you are probably sticking it to yourself (assuming you are a taxpayer)!!!!

Quitting smoking is the cheapest way to save your own life.
Cigarettes (nicotine) is/are a drug plain and simple.

Every other taxpayer will take up the slack.

The gov't will tax alcohol in the ground. The communist police state we are in you can't go to a bar and have a few drinks, with out the commies tracking you down.
Grant it some idiots do not know when to say when.
Knock on wood I'm not one of those idiots. I've been close a few times...LOL

Tobacco is ONLY the BEGINNING. Let NostraWilthrill predict the future for you.

Next will be "fattening" foods (which in today's USA means like 95% of food sold)

Then it will be LazyBoy recliners and sofas.

Then there will be a mandatory exercise hour (hell, the article referred to it).

Then, THEY will just make every health choice for you.

And all the while THEY will call it freedom.
