Rep Power: 45 ![]() | He had no right to get involved in politics the way he did. Well, he had the right to, but not as a tax-free entity.

Rep Power: 46 ![]() | Agreed Mikael, all of these "churches" that want to be politically involved should give up there tax-free status. In fact ANY organization that is involved in politics should be paying taxes. As matter a fact, I think all churches should pay taxes. You can't be preaching against "Babylon" all the while taking "Babylon's" money. |

Rep Power: 46 ![]() | heres my problem....this supposed man of god on many occasions chose to accuse and point fingers instead of console or help. he tried on many occasions to push his narrow view of morality on the rest of society, going as far as trying to influence law. during one of the darkest days of this country, he spewed bile on the american public instead of taking the opportunity to actually make a difference. although he may not use the same tactics as lets say rev phelps, i hold him in the same regards. as for taking babylons money, that reminds me of every weekend when i would see bus loads of people from central and northern misssissippi churches, the very people who fought so hard to keep gaming out of mississippi, drinking beer, putting their money in the slot machines or on the tables......patronizing the very thing they considered so evil.....the word this behavior is hypocrisy.

Rep Power: 46 ![]() | Junkernaut, I've spent many an hour in churches (assembly of God, Baptist, Charismatic, catholic, 7th day adventist and some I didn't even know the denomination) and there's not a dime's worth of difference between "church-goers" and "sinners". This, in fact, is a large part of the reason I call myself agnostic. I just don't see the rationale for tax-free churches. From the church point of view doesn't the bible (Jesus himself) say, "render unto ceasar what is ceasar's"? Furthermore, any time the gov't "gives" you something it comes with strings attached. If I were some "bible-believing" preacher I'd want to preach what GOD (or so I would tell myself. it really might be me) wanted me to preach not worry about Uncle Sam. From the gov't point of view, exactly WHAT is the benefit? The churches I see can afford to pay their property tax just like every other tax paying organization. As for the Falwell/Phelps comparision take homosexuality for example. Falwell's position - homosexuality is morally wrong. I love the individual homosexual as a person but he is living in sin." Phelps - god hates fags and, in fact, is killing our soldiers in Iraq because we don't hate fags enough. You may disagree with both but I'd argue there is definitely a difference in degree. |

Rep Power: 45 ![]() | True, enough Wil. There is a slight difference. But, I've never liked Falwell and never will.

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | It's part of the separation of church and state layed out by the founders. The government has done their part by staying out of church now it's church's turn to stay out of government. |
