| Another one not many people may have seen is "Harrison Bergeron". It was based on a Kurt Vonnegut story of a future where mediocracy is encouraged. Everybody strives to be average so for example really good ballet dancers are "handicapped" like racehorses by having to wear weights. The central character, Harrison, keeps getting in trouble for making A's at school so they fit him with a device that slows down his brainwaves to make him more average. It doesn't work and so they send him for a lobotomy but when he awakes from the anesthesia he is in a secret room and is recruited as one of the "leaders" of society. Roughly 3,000 intelligent people actually control everything that goes on although the general populace knows nothing about them. Upon being recruited his first task is to pick the US President. He opens a phone book and picks the first name he sees who happens to be an auto mechanic from New Jersey. I won't give away much more of the plot but one of the funniest scenes is a Presidential news conference where the new President announces he's launched nukes on some small country because, "they thought they could fuck us, well fuck them"!!!!
Incredibly good movie although it is kind of hard to find. |
