The U.S. and it's European allies are trying build a missle defense system to protect Europe from a possible attack by Iran and other rogue nations. Apparently, Russia views it as a threat, and has itself threatened to aim missles at European targets.

And so the question becomes are we going to allow OUR defense policy to be VETOED by the Russians?

You know those Ruskies have always been paranoid about SDI. It was so funny then because OUR press was saying that Reagan was a nut and SDI would never work but the Russians have ALWAYS felt otherwise.

And question number two: Can the Europeans possibly be bigger pussies?

Now, in fairness, I salute the czechs and poles who apparently support the plan to put SDI systems in their two countries.

But for the rest of the Europeans who are raising hell, is there ANY form of surrender you won't embrace?

OK a few points.

1. SDI is defensive only. It is IMPOSSIBLE to use SDI to ATTACK! The whole POINT of SDI REQUIRES that the other side fire it's missiles first otherwise you don't have any targets.

2. We, the USA, have spent literally BILLIONS of dollars protecting Europe. We have tons of men stationed in Europe. Wouldn't it be nice to give Europe a bullet-proof vest and bring some of those troops home? To those who complain about Iraq, we've been in Germany now for over 60 freaking years!!

3. Finally to the Europussies, a little lesson in manners, when someone is, at great costs to themselves and none to you, protecting you, THEY have the RIGHT to reconfigure their defense of you. It is the height of rudeness to DEMAND that they continue to employ a fifty year old, outdated and expensive strategy to protect you simply because you are too much of a pussy and are afraid of "offending" the enemy.

And BTW, I usually prefer to debate ideas without calling names but god-damnit the Euros have EARNED the title "pussies"!!!

basically if bush were smart he would offer to help build the SDI for the RUssians as well i.e. a global SDI is the only way to go to avoid starting more wars

I think he actually did offer the chance for Russia to be a part of it. They declined. Seems like Puntang is using this to present a "threat" to his people so he can consolidate power.

Mikael, you "mainstream media whore" how dare you mistitle this thread? Cold war indeed!!! If I had the tech know-how I'd put up one of those smiley faces.

Also, yesterday in his speech Bush invited the russians to come to the sites once they are set up and look around all they want. I mean come on folks, our "leaders" pretty much always give this tech away to friends and foe alike. So, no I don't think the Russian have a right to be concerned when we will give them the same tech that we paiod literally billions for.

I heard today that Putin proposed adding a site in Azerbyshan (or however the hell you spell it). It will cost more money but if it gets the Russians onboard we'll probably do it.
