Smoking

I'm just curious what everyone's opinions are regarding the purposed public bans on smoking in bars and resaturants? I have very strong opinions myself, but I would rather know yours to see how many people think beyond "i hate second hand smoke".

I come from a place that instituted that. It caused a serious problem with the attendance in the bars and several were shut down. I personally think that if you go to a bar that you should expect to be around smoke. Otherwise, find somewhere else to go.

I think it's bullshit. I'm a non-smoker, but damn....it's a bar for crying out loud. Second hand doesn't bother me. I expect it in bars. Restaurants already have smoking areas, I think that's enough. Fire it up!

I sort of agree with that. I dont smoke, and when I go out to a bar, I deal with the smoke. Doesnt mean I like it. I hate the sick feeling I get in my stomach after a couple of hours. I hate the way my clothes smell afterwards, but again, I expect it when I go out to a bar.
Maybe what they should do is open a few non-smoking bars and give people the choice. I mean, its not like its church or something.
( I never smoke. Not even when I'm drinking. So, now you know one..hehehe)

I smoke from time to time,(from time to time I mean EVERY time I drink...which is...all the time) but it wouldn't bother me if they banned smoking;
I think it sucks when a place is so damn smokey you can't even breath.

Smokers think they are some special race that deserves rights. It's funny to me how pissed smokers get when they ban smoking in public places.

I think it should be up to the bar, but like Tim said...it's business suicide around these parts.

I have been to bars where, belive it or not, hardley ANYONE was smoking. I even asked the bartender if I could smoke because I didn't see one person lighting up. It was nice. Most folks stepped out on the patio to light up.....

This is a very important point. Let me point out that they is not the government, but the business owners.

I believe you should be able to change vehicle oil in your restaurant if you want to. It's up to the public to decide where to go. It scares the hell out of me when the government takes control of these kind of issues. Sure, anti-smoking laws are all the rave now, but what happens when they start banning other things? Look closely at who spear heads these type of movements and look at what else they find "bad for you". Protect your rights and never be blind sided!

For the record I am a social smoker who perfers to smoke outside. Rather a bar is smoking or non makes no difference to me.

end rant.

the high cotton started off as non-smoking. I think it took about 6 months before they allowed smoking inside when they turn into "bar" mode

Most laws that deal with bars/food places have to do with your health. Thats why you cant change the oil in your car there. As far as not smoking in a bar, that would be for the general health of the citizens that they represent. right or wrong. It all depends on how you feel about that subject. I'm sure there are people that wouldnt mind taking a dump on the floor next to you while your eating. There are bad employees that spit, spooge, piss and throw pubes in food. The law is there so that those idiots go to jail for hurting your well being. Smoking is one of those things.
As I say, smoking in bars, I expect... I wish they would ban smoking in places that serve food, that are not bars. What I mean by that is that if you go to Jim Bobs, well expect smoke. If you go to McDonalds or Lookout 49 when food is severd, then ban it. sure, make smoking areas outside away from the front door if nessesary.
But again, going to a bar, smoke is expected.

I lived in California when they passed their law prohibiting smoking in all bars and restaurants. The issue they stressed was workplace safety for those who worked in bars and restaurants. They said a waitress working an 8-hour shift took in secondhand smoke equivalent to a pack a day habit.

Of course you can say they can choose another job, but really, can they?

The issue is freedom vs. public health hazard. The whole country is headed towards this, if it doesn't pass now it will in 5 or 10 years.

Again...do we need the government to regulate our health issues? You guys make a good point about work place safety and public health, but in my opinion it is no more the government's place or business to police than other social issues like marriage. The longer we let Washington believe we are too stupid to make our own decisions, the more they will insist on butting in.
