I already do it 3 times over.
The poorest mpg I own is my truck at 25.
The car gets 35, and my motorcycle gets about 60.(as long as I stay 60 mph or under)

Well you know, I have a wife and kids and am not suicidal, so I am concerned about safety also.....

However hellyeah's "logic" from above has been used for the last twenty years to NOT produce an efficient car.

Using the same "logic" we should all drive Hummers and get 5 mpg because Hummers are heavy and thus everything else is "unsafe"!!!! (That and I just love saying "hummer").

Currently, if I want a car that gets 50 mpg, I have to go with an unsafe car (because as noted above the Honda CRX and Geo don't do well in crash tests due to no steel reinforcement) OR I have to go with diesel which costs more than gas.

If I want a car that gets 40+ mpg I have to go "unsafe", diesel or hybrid (read expensive to buy and work on).

Is there ANYONE out there who can seriously maintain that the car manufacturers could not make a SAFE, gasoline powered car that got over 40 mpg????

They probably can. But I think there is this secret agreement between the car deals and the gas people to not do that. The old I'll scratch your back you scratch mine deal. And a couple of days ago I heard a comercial from a car dealer. The claim that if you buy one of their cars you will only pay $2.99 a gal. for the next two years I think. Maybe five. I can't remember. But that shows that deals between dealers and gas people do happen.

Well you know Ambergirl, you've just said DIRECTLY what I've been hinting at. I don't KNOW if GM and Big Oil have some kind of "agreement" but I do find it interesting that NOT ONE car manufacturer has released a high mpg (40+) gasoline powered reasonably priced car in the US market in the last couple of years. Instead they release hybrids that don't get high mpg (GM's Yukon non hybrid 14 mpg city 21 mpg highway GM's Yukon hydrid 21 mpg city 22 mpg highway) and certainly have to cost more to make than an updated (read fairly safe) Honda CRX etc.

I don't like to engage in "conspiracy thinking" but hell when the answer is staring them in the face and they still don't take it it makes you wonder.

all this talk about the hyrid this was spose to be some cure all to rising or outta site gas prices....but wouldnt it cost them to same to build a safe 40+ mpg car as much as it cost to build a hybrid maybe there is some connection between gas and car companies who knows......i think it woulda been more feesible to build a high mileage car

Yeah spert I know a gorgeous woman who works at Crest Honda. Just across the street is a Hummer dealership. Though I couldn't afford a Hummer if you GAVE it to me, I've often thought, "Boy if she worked over there I'd figure out some reason to visit!"

I haven't read most of this thread but I thought I would just throw in that Butch Ostelet in gulfport will no longer take SUV's or large to mid-size trucks on trade. They can't sell the ones they have.
