New Museum Draws Hundreds With Different Views On Creationism

Posted By: Deb Silverman

Memorial Day plans for hundreds of people included a visit to the new Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky.

Before the museum even opened today protesters were holding their signs while families were lining up to get inside.

There was a long wait to be one of the first inside the Creation Museum but you couldn't get inside the $27 million building created by the group called "Answers in Genesis Creation" without passing by a long line of protestors.

“They are outraged at the idea that a multi-million dollar museum of nonsense has been built in our area that is attempting to teach Bronze Age myths as truths,” says Edwin Kagin.

The protesters say the museum undermines the science of evolution.

They have driven hours to stand outside passing on messages like, "Support Science, Not Superstition."

Those who run the museum don't get why so many people have a problem with their biblical representation of the history of the world.

“All the museum is about is trying to show people, look at the bible's scenario of how the world is created. It's the best way to view all the things that we see today,” said Patrick Marsh, the museum design director.

The grand opening drew families like the Fletchers who live three-and-a-half hours away.

“We are people of faith, but we also love science. We think the two aren't mutually exclusive and I'm excited to have my kids exposed to quality education, perhaps with a little different philosophy than what's normally presented in the public school system,” said Michael Fletcher, a father of five children.

Nathan Kimbrough's public school biology teacher encouraged students to drive 133 miles from Plant City to visit the museum.

“Better than I thought it was going to be," said Kimbrough. "I thought it was going to be kinda boring."

To his mother, the trip through biblical history was not a religious experience.

Instead, she describes it as interesting.

“It gave me an idea of how evolution started,” said Kimbrough. "We went to the planetarium and it told us about the planets and many millions of miles away you were and the sun and the stars.”

“We live in a country where there's supposed to be free speech. All we're giving is an alternative view to the evolutionary view,” said Marsh.

I saw this story on CNN this morning, and they were claiming that the Earth is only thousands of years old not millions,WTF?

A new creationism-espousing museum is opening in the state of Kentucky. According to a New York Times article the museum depicts humans and dinosaurs living together in traditional 'diorama' style exhibit. 'Whether you are willing to grant the premises of this museum almost becomes irrelevant as you are drawn into its mixture of spectacle and narrative. Its 60,000 square feet of exhibits are often stunningly designed by Patrick Marsh, who, like the entire museum staff, declares adherence to the ministry's views; he evidently also knows the lure of secular sensations, since he designed the Jaws and King Kong attractions at Universal Studios in Florida. For the skeptic the wonder is at a strange universe shaped by elaborate arguments, strong convictions and intermittent invocations of scientific principle. For the believer, it seems, this museum provides a kind of relief: Finally the world is being shown as it really is, without the distortions of secularism and natural selection. '"
