Mascara is a trend.

Like in the 80's with spandex and aqua net. It will pass in a few years, and bands that did that will look back on those photos and say "my gosh we looked stupid".

that's an interesting topic.
I don't know how my opinion would be received, but here it is (it's just an opinion, so I guess it doesn't really matter anyway)
and of course, it's generalized and not directed at any specific bands

I don't think a band gets to say whether it's 'original-sounding' or not. I think the listeners are qualified to determine that.
I think any band playing/writing 'original' music thinks they sound original. I should hope so, anyway. But even some 'originals' don't sound original...
Does any of that make sense? Or am I way off here?

As far as "fashion-sense?" I'd prefer to see a band who looks like they at least gave a little thought to what they'd wear onstage for a show. I'm not a big fan of going on stage looking like you're ready to work in the yard.

as for the specifics of Bert's blog post, I don't know if I'm in the minority or not, but what grabs me about a band is the 'sound;' and I confess that I'm usually intrigued by a certain amount of musical 'skills.' I'm a stand-in-the-corner arms-folded taking-it-all-in kind of listener. I don't need a groove to dance to, I don't need fire and blood; but those wouldn't run me off either. Generally, I just want to see skilled musicians performing music they believe in. There are certain styles I'm going to prefer, naturally- but I can dig any group of musicians working hard to make a musical statement.

white belt? Eye makeup? Mohawk? Ethiopian Lip-plates and neck-rings? I don't mind any of that if the music is great.
