OCEAN SPRINGS --The Mary C. O'Keefe Cultural Center is hosting the third annual Ocean Springs Music Festival on July 21 at Marshall Park and organizers say this year's event includes a lineup of rock 'n' roll bands with an explosive local flavor.
Music lovers from all walks of life are in for a treat as a schedule of seven Mississippi and Louisiana bands will perform for the all-day celebration to help nurture the burgeoning music scene in South Mississippi.
The annual music festival is a way to raise money for the Scharr-Ello Music Studio at the Mary C. O'Keefe Cultural Center.
Musicians of all ages are able to use the studio to learn, practice and develop their musical talents.
"All of the bands are playing for free," said Alex Scharr, band member of The River Company and co-coordinator of the festival.
"The Youth Symphony uses the (Scharr-Ello) room every week and this project has gotten many young people of the community involved in a way that has meaning and importance to them," he said.
The music studio project was inspired by four college students in summer 2004 as a way to help musicians record their music. To date, more than $60,000 has been raised to fund the music studio by youth in the community and their friends
The students - Alex Scharr, Travis Scharr, Bradley Dale, and Daniel Lorrain - initiated the music festival as a community project to promote the music studio and assist local musicians. It was officially dedicated in December 2006.
"Last year's event drew an estimated 1,000 people and our sponsors and bands are optimistic this year will be even bigger," said Donald Scharr, co-coordinator for the festival.
Musical entertainment includes The River Company, Ko-Lija, De La Cruz, Jak Locke, Goodman County, Subtle Shot, and Best Left Unsaid.
Rex Distributing, Thompson Engineering and the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring the community-wide event.
