Definitely true! When I was a kid we wanted 100-watt heads and 2 412 cabs - you stand back and look at your amp and get a boner!

Then you get into the club and the soundman makes you turn down til you can't get the push sound out of the tubes. You'd be surprised how loud 15 watts of tube power can be. Not much clean headroom but you can get a loud punchy distortion sound with 15 watts, and at a volume where a soundman won't bust your balls.

Of course it depends on the band you're in too. 15 tube watts ain't gonna cut it in a thrash band - but 40 would if you're playing with guys with 100-watt SS amps. BIG diff between the two ratings.

That's the comparison I always make when a woman asks me why I need a number of guitars. Different ones for different purposes - like different tunings, a big think these days.

Then you need at least 2 of the ones with the tuning you use most, in case you break a string in the middle of a show you just grab another guitar instead of stopping the show to change a string. What a buzzkill that is!

You gotta learn how to change strings fast, think NASCAR, if you can get it on and tuned in 20 seconds or less it is much more impressive (seen it done).

But I agree, it is much more efficient to grab another guitar.

we're pretty good about bringing 3 or 4 guitars with us for that very reason.
it only takes having a guitar break on you ONE time to ensure you bring a back-up.

but we also need some subs and a crossover (or combo of the two).
We have a 100ft stage snake we can throw in the mix if people want to do some serious trading.
