New toy

Just purchased a SpiderIII 150HD today and it comes with a midi controller through Line6. It should be here by Friday then I am going to make some frigging noise between the 5150, the Tech21's and now this amp. Loads of noise both heads running same time through my duel 4X12's............

Its a new amp head by Line6 150 watts. I have a few 4X12 (a cab with 4 twelve inch guitar speakers). One for the 5150 and one for the Line6 150III HD

You're gonna have to turn the 5150 down a lot to make it level with the Line 6. That head is actually 75w per side with 2 channels. You should try it out through both 412 cabs by itself so you can get the stereo image of the effects, too. Or if one of your 412s can be run in stereo mode, try that. It brings the most out of that amp.

But it will be nowhere near as loud as the 5150. Even the HD147 which is 300 watts (150wattsx2) won't quite do that because 120 tube watts is a lot louder than 150 solid state watts.

But if you can get your band to play at a lower volume that head will get quite a few cool tones that can really complement your playing.

Something else I noticed is it is rated at 8 ohms not 16 ohms, I guess we will have to test drive it. I have 30 days to return the head. I was over aaron's last night we started playing a few riffs through the 5150. We got the clean channel up to 3 on the pre and around 4.5 on the master and it was way loud. I love the 5150 and thats not going anywhere any time soon.....

Impedance mismatches are a lot more of an issue for solid state amps than for tube amps too. They will tend to shut down, especially if the speaker impedance is lower than what the amp wants. So a 16 ohm cab might work, but a 4 ohm cab could well blow up the amp. And blowing it by using a cab of the wrong impedance could also void your warranty, so make sure whether that's the case before proceeding.

Good call on keeping the 5150 around! The SpiderIII might be useful for some things but the 5150 is great at what it does!

I suggested that he uses his POD for a preamp, split off into the Line 6 head as well as the 5150 going into his fender and marshall cabs, going back and forth between the clean channels for his POD, and his Line 6 and 5150 for his dirty's. then he will really be doing the chinese fire drill dance on stage but mhmmm good stuff
